What inspired you to
becom a DJ? |
 |
Early Electro / Hip-Hop the whole B-Boy thing
really, just wanted to be able to scratch! |
|
| |
|
 |
What was your first
gig and how did you blag it? |
 |
My first gig, funnily enough, was warming up in the
Pier in 1988. When I used to go to the Pier as a clubber
in those days 1987-88, they never played any Hip-Hop/House,
so I started taking a bag of Hip-Hop tracks with me
and asking the DJ at the time to play some of them for
us, which to my amazement he did!
I carried on doing this for a couple of months and gradually
the DJ began to get into the music and started to play
some Hip-Hop and House tracks, which the punters seemed
to like. As it was me that got him into the music, he
offered me a job doing the lights, as the lighting jock
was leaving.... I said yes, of course, and started to
do the lights at the Pier.
One aspect of doing the lights in the Pier, at that
time, was to warm up for the first two hours before
the main DJ came on. So this was it, my chance to play
my kind of music to a good size crowd, this was back
in the days when you had to warm a club up properly!!
Not playing all the Big tracks before 12.00pm etc, back
then warming a club up was an art, something sadly lost
in
todays club culture. The club back then was still playing
commercial chart music, so it took some time for the
punters to accept the new House sound, but they did
eventually, and the club has never looked back.
